About
Anna Kilmer
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor with over two decades of experience helping people heal. I've lived in several different parts of the U.S. and Brazil, in urban, suburban, and rural settings, in upper middle class and impoverished neighborhoods. I've worked with people ages three through 93, and in a variety of settings including outpatient, intensive outpatient, intensive in-home, residential, and military installations. I was once fluent in Portuguese and Spanish - not so fluent anymore. I'm a straight, white, cisgender woman with two adult children.
Experience
Post-Traumatic Growth and Safety in Connection
I started in this field working with adults suffering from addiction, which naturally led me to become more specialized in trauma treatment. I've worked extensively with trauma survivors from all walks of life, including active duty military personnel, veterans and their families, and immigrants from Latin America, both documented and undocumented. I do my best to keep myself educated about multi-cultural norms, shifts, strengths, and needs, and I've always participated in ongoing education and consultation well beyond the requirements of my licensure.
Fundamentally, I believe in post-traumatic growth and safety in connection. My approach is flexible, intuitive, and collaborative. I welcome you as you are. I have training and experience in several evidence based practices including EMDR, Ego State Therapy, Clinical Hypnosis, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Psychodrama, and other skills based, experiential, and trauma focused therapies. Nevertheless, I will never consider myself an expert on anybody but myself, and even that's an ongoing work in progress. Whether you're coming to me for personal work or professional consultation, I'm interested in learning about you from you and helping you to help yourself.

I don’t list my current professional associations on my website because I regularly assess and shift my participation in organizations based on what I feel that organization is contributing to me and/or the community at large. Some of the professional organizations I’ve been a part of include The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD), The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), The American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (ASGPP), as well as national and state level counseling associations. Typically, you’ll see a provider listed on an organization's ‘Find a Therapist’ resource page when they’re a current paying member of the organization. Paying members help these organizations address larger scale issues and needs that may be beyond the scope of an individual practitioner.
